Rise of the jeggings!

Posted by: selphie18 on: December 5, 2009

It didn’t escape my notice for long that my wardrobe has a serious lack of the new ‘thing’, jeggings. A cross between jeans and leggings (haha, get it? No, I didn’t make that name up!) it’s hard to know whether to wear them as one or the other, or simply embrace them as something completely different. Either way, I brought a pair to see what’d happen when I tried them out, and my efforts were richly rewarded. I teamed them with some new patent black boots and my Tokyo top. Clinging to my legs like leggings, I found they never rode up like normal skinny jeans do with boots, and although getting them on and off at first was a task, I’m getting used to them :)

Old old old

Looking back through old photos is always funny, no? Embarassing and yet oh so funny at the same time. I had a huge ‘clear-out’ of my photo folder on my laptop the other day, and it’s surprising how much junk you collect…you end up thinking ‘where did this come from?! What’s the point in it?!’ haha

Of course, I also came across some which I did for my old blog, nothing special, but I thought you may want to see…

The way I talk, I’m making it sound like these photos were taken AGESSSS ago. Well, they weren’t. Actually they were taken near the beginning of my student life (I mean, the VERY beginning haha) and when it was still safe to wear just a top and a light cardigan outside without dying a slow and painful death from the cold (trust me, I stand waiting for the bus for at least an hour everyday, and I’m telling you…it’s freezing here, like most of England lol)

I still have the whole outfit, and I’m seriously considering digging out my good old long-sleeved knitted slouch top to wear again. It’ll have to be adapted for the cold weather, but I see myself layering up with a skirt over it, thick leggings or tights, boots and a nice thick jacket of some kind.

Which reminds me, I really need some new boots at some point. Some nice, cosy, warm and waterproof boots which will go with both skinny jeans and skirts.

I will find a pair. Even if it takes me ages, I’ll find them ^__^

Vintage skirts!

Posted by: selphie18 on: November 22, 2009

Bristol really is a great shopping location…as well as cabot circus (open until 8pm, often prompting me to go on friday night ‘late’ shopping trips), Broadmead, Park Street, the HUGE primark (according to Wikipedia, the largest primark store in the world…though I’m not sure if this includes London…) and the galleries (you’ve probably noticed I’m referring mostly to the shopping areas near or near-ish the centre, maybe because these are the ones I visit the most!) but what about the more quirky and vintage shopping areas? What about the markets?

Every friday and saturday along Corn street there is a market running, familiar to all those born-and-bred Bristolians. Although not a big market, the trinkets and unusual hand-made crafts and home-made food you can buy there are always worth a look, and I was made particularly happy by a stall selling vintage items of clothing at great prices!

The thing that really caught my eye was the selection of skirts on offer; all the mini-skirts were £5 and there was a good choice. From my usual favourite pleated skirts (had to control myself slightly after seeing some gorgeous pleated Asian style schoolgirl skirts) to plain, straight, decorated and everything in between! Tried on a few but it was a grey (definitely my new favourite colour of the season!) skirt with pleats and a houndstooth mini-skirt which truly won me over (and fitted!)

Wore the grey skirt with a yellow long sleeved knitted top, unfortunately no photos of it at this time, but hopefully to come…

The grey skirt really is stunning…just my kind of skirt! It looks even better on…

I wore the houndstooth with black leggings (too cold for thin tights, I’m afraid!), boots, and a layered combination of my grey ‘Hello Kitty vegetarian’ top and a vest over it.

The t-shirt actually says “kiss me…I’m a vegetarian” and it was a great present I received from two of my best friends, Katie and Maria, for my birthday. Rediscovering the joy of wearing and layering t-shirts can only make me happy!

The t-shirt in its entirety…

Whilst the grey skirt is the real stunner of the two, the houndstooth was fantastic…it looks lovely on… :)

Blog removal…or not…

Posted by: selphie18 on: November 10, 2009

The last few days I’ve been considering deleting my blog; I’m a perfectionist and not so happy with my lack-lustre quality photos and writing. Not only that, but blogging does take up time; time which may be scarce at certain points as I work furiously to complete uni assignments and the like…

Anyways, I’ve been talked out of this by various friends and my boyfriend, all of whom seem to think I’m crazy for wanting to stop…yeah it’s fun, but it’s not easy running a blog (even one as mediocre as mine.) It was clear from the outset I wasn’t 100% sure I wanted to delete it (despite the fact I probably should!) so getting feedback saying I shouldn’t pretty much made me stop and reconsider…

For better or for worse, it looks like the blog lives to see another day…

Today was freezing, so had to invest in some serious layering to keep the warm in…

9th nov 001

Yeti t-shirt (not the ‘boyfriend’ one; which makes me wonder…why do I seem to have recurring themes of yetis in my t-shirt selection?! Haha) was layered underneath, with a black vest top (definitely a classic wardrobe essential!) and then my khaki green waistcoat over that.

Just add zip-up hoodie (unsettling how useful it’s become, especially in layering!) and my grey double-breasted jacket and you’re ready to face the Bristol chill…and I’m not kidding when I say it was very cold, especially this evening!

Who knows…?

Had a great evening out tonight! Two of my best friends, Maria and Katie (who had travelled from Southampton to visit Bristol!) went out together for a mini reunion! Now as they sit here flicking through a ‘Robert Pattinson’ book (they’re huge fans, I’m not so keen…) I decided it would be a good type to blog.

I haven’t really had chance to blog for a while; uni assignments are really keeping me busy! But today was a definite skirt day!

Whited out my face for aesthetic purposes :) nov 7th 015

Wore my b&w pleated skirt, decorated tights, and then a long-sleeved ribbed white top with a black blouse layered and held in with a stretch belt. In the evening (when these photos were taken) I wore a rounded across the shoulder bag with a chain/material strap (very Chanel, but on a budget…)

You can see my outfit pretty clearly in the second photo-the belt really cinches into my waist (so much it had to be undone when we went for the evening meal-sometimes belts are hard work! Haha.)

nov 7th 006 2

Here’s a pic of me holding Mr Pattinson’s book before Katie and Maria started to scan it cover to cover. Note the whited-out face. Maybe I’m getting a bit too keen with this paint tool…

I apologise to any Robert Pattinson fans…… :P

nov 7th 001

I took a lovely photo of Maria and Katie :)

Also Katie took the photo of me on my bed, smiling. Note my newly dyed hair! Proud owner of brown-black hair since Saturday :)

Halloween!

Posted by: selphie18 on: November 2, 2009

oct 31st 001Ok, as promised, the day photos for Halloween are here!

oct 31st 008

I wore a plain white t-shirt layered with a rather amazing acid-wash (loving the acid/stone-wash right now!) long t-shirt, with my zip belt cinching my waist in!

Then threw on some black leggings and long boots and I was ready to go! :)

Sorry for the awful anti-posing and awkward positions my boyf has caught me in; it seems he has a talent for catching me in weird poses! Haha

Here are my evening photos, in which I dressed up as a psychotic Japanese school-girl (I just don’t know where I get these ideas…LOL) which was rather fun :D

oct 31st 005

Here’s me near the waterfront in Bristol. Had a rather nice walk-around there with my flat-mates and friends. You can see I found another use for my grey pleated school-girl skirt, and the blouse is a cheap buy from primark which I promptly ruined with tears and fake blood smeared all over. The boyf also got quite carried away with the blood. He refused to wear an outfit himself but did seem to enjoy applying liberal amounts of fake blood to me, until I was completely covered!

oct 31st 024

By the end of the night (or morning, by the time we finished!) I was exhausted but happy…and still covered in fake blood! Haha

The photo on the right was taken at the end, just before I started attempting to scrub it all off. I was pretty tired by then, as you can probably see.

Dressing up and walking the streets of Bristol at night on a Halloween is a great experience. Loads of people were dressed up and everywhere you looked there was some kind of character, scary, sexy or silly that someone was dressed as, and you can tell some people really do make an effort. The only problem was it wasn’t the best night to wear a short skirt like I had…winter is coming and it was slightly chilly at times, but it was worth it! :) I really love Halloween <3

I love fridays

Posted by: selphie18 on: November 1, 2009

I knew friday was going to be a busy day, what with lectures, seminars and then one of my best friends visiting me to stay the night, so I needed something casual, easy yet I knew it would have to look good too :)

oct 30th 005

I layered one of the cutest dresses I own, with tie-up sleeves and a ruffled skirt section. To adapt it for a more Autumn look I wore a plain white t-shirt under it. The dress was a little too short to be worn with tights, so I opted for opaque black leggings and then wore my longer boots (my feet have finally recovered.)

To keep me warm I added my (new favourite) grey jacket.

Maria helped me take the photos, many thanks :D

Let’s wear shorts!

Posted by: selphie18 on: October 30, 2009

The tights/leggings under denim shorts has become a fairly common sight now as you walk around Bristol. Yet at one point, I remember a time when virtually nobody did it-when did it catch on? I’m not sure myself, but of course I haven’t been able to resist buying in to see what its like, as you’ve seen from a few of my previous posts where I mix shorts (in particular denim) and some form of tights or leggings to make the base of an outfit.

Today I decided was another good day for this kind of thing, especially as I was eager to try out my new grey knit tights. As I’ve mentioned a few times before, grey has really grown on me recently as a colour I really want to buy, try and wear. Whilst my love for the colour yellow lives on (bright, cheerful and sunny, but unfortunately hard to mix at times and not very seasonal in winter…no?) I seem to have a special place in my heart for greys (yellow and grey; what a contrast! haha) so I was particularly hopeful as I tried to match my grey tights with an outfit.

Chunky and thick, the tights make me think of my primary schooldays (thick knitted tights and socks) and winter (if you’re going to wear tights in winter, these are the ones.) However, grey tights are harder to compliment with an outfit than black, leaving me having to seriously consider my next move.

Finally decided on matching with shorts, a plain black top and my grey hoodie (again! And there’s me thinking I’d never wear it again…) my workload was particularly heavy today, so I used my black and white ‘Roxy’ backpack that I’d brought when I was in America last…

29th oct 013

Of course, my feet are still in ‘rest stage’ so I’m afraid nothing but the good old converse to finish it off!

29th oct 019

In the photo of my converse, you can really see the colour of the tights. In the mirror pic (it was pretty difficult to get an angle where you could even see my tights, trust me!) you can see me complete with my backpack, all ready for a day at university (well, almost…)

Hm…the cons are starting to look pretty battered…they last ages, but even I’m pushing it (haha.) Maybe it’s time for me to invest in a new pair…or maybe put them on my christmas list…

Jimmy Choo for H&M

Posted by: selphie18 on: October 29, 2009

I’ve always loved H&M…great, quirky and exciting fashion at a reasonable price. Whenever I go in I always find something I want to buy, and since there’s two H&Ms very close to where I live (I live practically one minute away from the first one) they’re always one of the first stops on my shopping list.

Now, I’ve found out through the wonders of the H&M newsletter that Jimmy Choo has done a collection for H&M which is to released 14th of November. Exciting news of course, as it means that those not usually able to afford any of the usual Jimmy Choo can enjoy it :)

According to the website, a queue system is in place; the first 160 in the line will be allocated a time when they can browse the women’s shoes, accessories and bags, however the women’s and men’s clothing collection will be open for anyone to browse at anytime. There doesn’t seem to be much more info out at this point, although H&M aims to wet our appetite by providing a glimpse into the collection, go take a look; http://www.hm.com/gb/#/jimmychoo/

From the looks of these pics, it looks set to be a good one. Opening on a saturday means I should be able to pop in and take a look! The shoes are skyscraper high (and therefore virtually impossible for me to walk in) but who wouldn’t covet Jimmy Choos?!

The asymmetric dress in grey caught my eye as well. With grey gaining in my ‘favourite colours selection’ I feel I should at least check it out in person when it’s released…

But for now, let’s sit tight and wait until the 14th before the UK goes crazy for Jimmy Choo…

Mona Lisa Smile

Posted by: selphie18 on: October 29, 2009

29th oct 003Excuse the lack of posting; it seems my lovely life can bog me down a bit in work, and lack of subject matter has meant I haven’t really thought it was worth it to update my blog with my rather mundane outfits over the last few days. From tomorrow, I am hoping things shall return (relatively) back to normal.

But for now, I want to share with you this lovely trinket I acquired a while ago. It’s a locket with the Mona Lisa on the front. From my (rather vague) memory, I believe I was given it whilst clearing through my late grandfather’s stuff a few years back. Not to sound all melodramatic or go all corny on you, but from the moment I saw it I thought it was special. There’s something quite comforting about it.

I have no idea how much it is worth, but I don’t care much either. To me it’ll always be special… :)

The combination of my bad quality camera (trust me, I want a new one! D:) and the general lighting effects of my room meant that the photo didn’t come out well at all, despite taking loads…

It’s still blurry, but you get the gist of the idea…too bad you can;t see how truly beautiful the necklace really is, but maybe that’s something I should keep to myself, as a personal opinion and trinket…
